Romance scams

How does it work?

A conversation is started on social media, online dating website, or by answering a wrong number text message. Companionship is developed between you and the illicit actor over time. Eventually, the illicit actor will: (1) Ask you to send money or (2) Help them move money.

The illicit actor typically portrays an individual in the military overseas, oil rig worker, or traveling overseas for work. In all scenarios, the illicit actor is never able to meet you in person.

Common Tactics

(1) Overseas and cannot meet in person

(2) Video chatting using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to portray individual in stolen pictures being used.

Where’s the Fraud?

(1) If you send your own money, the funds may be used for illegal activities. The illicit actor will continue to ask for money.

(2) The illicit actor will send you money, typically from another individual being scammed. The illicit actor will then ask you to send the funds to another individual.

Red Flags

(1) Never met illicit actor in person

(2) Requested money to be sent or received from unknown individual

Next Steps

(1) Discontinue communications with illicit actor
