Tech support scams

• James receives a pop-up on his computer claiming
there is malware or something is wrong with computer.
• James calls phone number provided and talks to
unknown person.
• Unknown person gains access to James’ computer to
assess the problem.
• Unknown person states they can fix the issue but
needs payment from James.
• James is directed to make payment via gift cards.
• James visits local retail store to purchase gift cards.
Once purchased, James sends images of gift cards to
unknown person.
• Payments will continue to be requested until James
stops providing. Unknown person also placed malware
on James’ computer to collect data entered.

The red flags

• James had communications with unknown individuals.
• James was directed to send money or gift cards to an
unknown individual.
• James provided his personal banking information.
• James willingly accepted money from unknown sources.

What to do?

• STOP communicating with the unknown individual.
• COMMUNICATE with your financial institution.
• ALWAYS question why you are willing to send money
to an unknown individual.
• ALWAYS do your own research before clicking on
links.
• TELL the truth. Even if the unknown individual tells you
what to say – be honest
