Family Emergency Scam

How does it work?

A phone call, text message, or social media message is received from an unknown phone number or profile. The unknown person claims to be a family member of yours and they are in trouble.

The family member has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail. The family member asks you to send cash to an address provided.

Common Tactics

(1) Phone call is received and voice of family member is portrayed using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

(2) A panic voice is portrayed over the phone call and you are unable to determine if it is the identified family member.

Where’s the Fraud?

Money sent for family member to get out of jail are sent to an unknown individual. Family member is truly not in jail.

Red Flags

(1) Does the caller sound like your family member?

(2) Asked to send money to unknown individual.

(3) Requests for more money continue to be received.

Next Steps

If you receive a phone call from a family member in an emergency situation, tell the caller you will call them back. Then call your family member on the phone number you always talk to them on and confirm the emergency.
