Online Job Scam

How does it work?

There are multiple scenarios of an online job scam that can occur as job offers may be available through multiple avenues.

Scenario #1: You look for a new job online through Indeed, Zip Recruiter, etc. You find the perfect job and apply. You complete a job interview via Zoom and you get the job. After a few weeks of doing the job remotely, you inquire about your paycheck. Your new supervisor sends you a check in a FedEx package and asks you to send overpayment to unknown individual for a designated reason.

Scenario #2: You receive a letter and check in the mail to be a secret shopper. The letter describes steps to shop at Wal-Mart and purchase two gift cards. First, you must deposit the check received to your bank account. Once the check is deposited, you purchase two gift cards at Wal-Mart. You are asked to scratch the codes on the gift cards and send the information to a phone number listed in the number.

Scenario #3: You answer an online job ad on social media. The unknown individual contacts you to complete the job and offers to pay for the services prior to the job being completed. You receive a check in the mail and are asked to send the overpayment to another individual.

Common Tactics

(1) All communication is done via Zoom, email, or text message.

(2) Check sent via FedEx envelope.

(3) Asked to send portion of paycheck to unknown individual for other services.

(4) Gift card information sent to unknown individual.

Where’s the Fraud?

The check received for deposit is a fraudulent check. If the check is successfully deposited and the funds are used, you are then liable to pay the Bank back the funds used, if funds are not available in your account.
