Sweepstakes or Lottery Scam

How does it work?

A message is received from an unknown individual or a cloned social media page of a friend you know. The friend states they saw your name on a sweepstakes winner list and states to contact the sweepstakes representative.

In contacting the sweepstakes representative, you learn you’ve won $5,000,000.00. You are told to claim the winnings, you must pay a processing fee of $500.00. You willingly send the money as directed.

A few days later, the sweepstakes representative calls and states they made an error and to collect your winnings, an additional $1,000.00 is needed for taxes. You willingly send the money as directed.

The sweepstakes representative will continue to ask for more money to be sent for various reasons to claim the winnings.

Common Tactics

(1) Continuing to find different fees to pay to claim winnings.
(2) Frequent phone calls inquiring on fees.

Where’s the Fraud?

The person that originally contacted you was not a person truly known. No winnings existed. You are willingly sending personal money to an unknown individual.

Red Flags

(1) Did you enter a sweepstakes? If no, how do you win a sweepstakes?
(2) Unlimited fees are not required on sweepstakes.

Next Steps

(1) Contact the person that notified you of the winnings to confirm if it was truly them that contacted you.
(2) Contact your financial institution if account information was compromised.
